Building the case for Public Health issues in South Africa.

About This Partner Organization

SAVE Foundation is a registered non-profit organization that works to enrich, educate and empower various township and settlement communities. Established in 2006, SAVE Foundation’s aim is to provide support for local communities by assisting with educational & public health programs, youth development, and sports & skills development, which will enable them to rise above the vicious cycle of poverty that these young people find themselves in. Their goal is to bring new skills to a community that otherwise would not have access to them and provide disadvantaged children with the education, skills and knowledge to create a future for themselves, their family and – ultimately – their community.

Why Choose This Focus Area?

Public health is an ongoing issue in South Africa. An access gap for health care facilities exist between upper and lower socioeconomic households, with the gap becoming more prominent as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. On this internship, interns will learn from those in the field – while supporting a local clinic in the Cape Town community where primary health care options are currently nonexistent. Through advocacy & fundraising campaigns, students will discover the unique challenges of providing adequate medical care in rural communities, while contributing to these causes through their internship projects. Comparing and contrasting health care practices of the western world with traditional medicine, students will be challenged to develop creative solutions for health workers in developing countries.
